Ukraine's Medium-Range Operations
Ukraine is scaling up its medium-range strikes to dismantle Russian logistics and push toward the demilitarization of Crimea. A new air-power strategy, crafted by former Defense Minister Andriy Zagorodnyuk alongside Western advisors, has become a cornerstone of the country's defense planning. On May 27, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced the intensification of these operations, which have already delivered measurable results.
Throughout May, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) struck 414 enemy headquarters, command posts, and other rear-area targets. According to the Institute for the Study of War, Ukraine has begun reclaiming more territory than it loses for the first time since 2023. The casualty ratio has also shifted in Ukraine's favor: for every Ukrainian killed or wounded, eight Russian soldiers are now lost, compared to a 1-to-3 ratio in Russia's favor back in December.
Costs and Emerging Technologies
Russia is suffering heavy human losses, with approximately 35,000 personnel casualties each month, while managing to recruit only about 27,000 new troops. To bolster its military capabilities, Ukraine's Defense Ministry and General Staff have allocated over $111 million for medium-range systems. Ukrainian manufacturers have also ramped up production of weapons with ranges between 24 and 200 kilometers, strengthening the country's defensive posture.
Under this new strategy, Ukrainian drones are targeting command posts, ammunition and fuel depots, drone control centers, and enemy reserves. Additionally, Ukraine has repeatedly struck transport routes, railways, and bridges near the Kerch Strait, complicating Russian supply lines. Sustained attacks on the Black Sea Fleet have forced Russia to withdraw most of its vessels from the region.
Andriy Zagorodnyuk noted, 'Crimea is turning from an asset into a burden.'
Military commander Volodymyr Mirchuk emphasized, 'Our regiment's goal is to control depth,' reflecting the broader push to strengthen Ukraine's position in the area. In this way, Ukraine continues to execute its strategy, aiming not only to regain lost territory but also to halt further Russian aggression.
Ukraine's tactical shift and the expansion of medium-range operations highlight its adaptation to modern warfare.
