Founder of Kvazar Micro Outlines Ukraine's Realistic Path in the Global Chip Industry

Керівник Kvazar Micro ділиться баченням того, як Україна може стати важливим гравцем на світовому ринку мікрочіпів.

Ukraine's Prospects in the Semiconductor Sector

Yevhen Utkin, founder of the company Kvazar Micro, has stated that constructing domestic semiconductor fabrication plants is not a viable option for Ukraine due to the prohibitive costs involved. Instead, he argues the country should focus on carving out a niche in designing intellectual products and systems. Utkin noted that building factories to produce highly complex chips requires investments in the hundreds of billions of dollars, making such a venture unrealistic for the Ukrainian market.

During an interview with political analyst Yuriy Romanenko, Utkin emphasized that Ukraine has little chance of competing seriously in the physical manufacturing of microchips. However, he pointed out that Ukraine could capture a segment of the European market, where there is a significant shortage of skilled professionals.

“We don't have any real chance in serious chip manufacturing. But we can take a piece of the market in Europe because they lack people.” - Yevhen Utkin

He cited the example of the British company ARM, founded by a Cambridge professor. ARM does not manufacture physical products; it sells intellectual property and is valued at $60 billion. Utkin stressed the importance of this business model:

“It's the coolest company in the world. It doesn't manufacture anything; it sells intellectual property, it sells its brains. It's worth $60 billion! The technology from ARM is inside every mobile device, inside every phone.” - Yevhen Utkin

According to him, major firms like AMD and Nvidia purchase designs from ARM, demonstrating the critical role of intellectual property in the modern tech world. Utkin believes Ukraine should concentrate its efforts on the next level of technological development, which includes:

  • element base
  • components
  • products
  • systems

“Our clearing is the next level,” he concluded.

In the context of intense global technological competition, Ukraine's potential focus on designing intellectual products could become a vital strategy for its economic development. The global semiconductor market demands enormous capital investment, pushing nations like Ukraine to seek alternative entry points into the tech sector, such as through IP development. This approach could attract investment and foster new technological growth within the country, offering a more accessible path than capital-intensive manufacturing.

As Ukraine navigates its position in the global tech landscape, the challenges posed by exclusion from European technology initiatives could further undermine its efforts to establish a foothold in the semiconductor market. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for grasping how Ukraine can leverage its strengths in intellectual property to overcome these barriers.
