According to journalists, the Ukrainian government has not imposed a ban on Hasidic pilgrimages to Uman, despite initial media reports. The Times of Israel initially reported that in September 2025 Ukraine would prohibit pilgrimages on Rosh Hashanah due to the threat of Russian attacks, but later this information was denied by the journalist himself, referencing the spokesperson of the Israeli Foreign Ministry.
The decision regarding the pilgrimage to Uman is being considered with regard to security issues. A representative from Ukraine noted that they expect support from Israel in case of permission for the pilgrimage, which would include financial support and police presence in Uman.
Hasidic pilgrimage: traditions and requirements
The pilgrimage to Uman is an annual trip of Hasidim to the grave of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov to celebrate the Jewish New Year Rosh Hashanah. This event gathers tens of thousands of believers. It is also worth noting that the government of Moldova requires certain guarantees from Israel before the arrival of pilgrims to the country and subsequent travel to Uman.
After initial media reports about the ban on pilgrimages to Uman, it turned out that the Ukrainian government had not made such a decision, and the question of holding the pilgrimage will be considered taking into account security concerns. Israel is also prepared to provide support in case permission is granted for the pilgrimage, including financial assistance and police presence in Uman.
