Ukraine in Talks with Gulf Nations and the U.S.
Ukraine is actively negotiating with Gulf states and the United States to share its hard-won experience in countering Iranian drones. According to Politico, which cites two senior Ukrainian officials, Kyiv aims to secure funding for its domestic defense industry and Patriot interceptor missiles through these talks. This comes as Ukraine's defense sector has become a critical component of its war effort and a potential exporter of battlefield-tested technology.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the U.S. has requested specific assistance from Ukraine to help defend against 'Shahed' drones in the Middle East.
“We received a request from the United States for specific support in protecting against 'Shaheds' in the Middle Eastern region. I have given instructions to provide the necessary means and ensure the presence of Ukrainian specialists who can guarantee the required level of security,”Zelenskyy stated.
Iranian 'Shahed' drones continue to target American bases, as well as cities and critical infrastructure in Gulf countries. Meanwhile, a €90 billion European Union loan promised to Ukraine remains blocked by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's veto.
Bolstering Defense and International Cooperation
A representative from Ukraine's defense-industrial complex noted strong international interest in its counter-drone systems.
“We see strong interest in Ukrainian drone defense systems from a very wide range of countries, including the United States. This is entirely understandable: Ukraine has created unique, combat-proven solutions for detecting, tracking, and countering this type of threat in real-world conditions,”the official said.
Ukraine's defense industry has expanded dramatically since the full-scale invasion began, growing from an annual capacity of $1 billion to $50 billion. President Zelenskyy emphasized this growth, stating,
“Ukraine has not had this many missiles since the start of the war,”underscoring the country's increasing role in international defense cooperation.
Ukraine's involvement in international defense initiatives, particularly against Iranian drones, highlights its growing expertise in global security and its strategy to strengthen its own defenses through foreign funding. The negotiations with the U.S. and Gulf nations underscore the importance of collaboration against modern threats that transcend regional borders. However, the blockage of the EU loan illustrates Ukraine's continued reliance on external financial resources to realize its defense ambitions.
