Official Appeal to Israel
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has confirmed that Kyiv has made a formal request to Israel concerning the vessel Panoramitis. The request, sent by the Office of the Prosecutor General to Israeli authorities, is based on a Ukrainian court order to seize the ship. The vessel is suspected of transporting grain that was illegally taken from a closed port located in a temporarily occupied region of Ukraine.
Ukraine's Diplomatic Inquiry
Sybiha stated that
“Ukraine has officially reached out to Israel through diplomatic and legal channels, asking for action regarding the Panoramitis”. He further emphasized that
“this is not Twitter diplomacy, but a concrete legal and diplomatic request for international legal assistance, which demands a response”. The minister expressed hope that the Israeli side would treat this request with seriousness rather than responding with emotional statements.
This incident highlights the need for international cooperation to combat illicit trade, especially during armed conflicts. Ukraine’s appeal to Israel may signal a broader push to strengthen its global efforts to safeguard its economic interests and uphold international law. The Israeli government's response could carry significant implications for future bilateral relations and the wider regional dynamics.
This formal request comes amid Ukraine's ongoing efforts to address illegal grain trafficking, as highlighted in a recent case involving another vessel near Israel.
