The Freyja Project and Its Importance for Ukraine
Ukraine is critically dependent on U.S.-made Patriot systems, which are the only reliable means of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles. This month, Russia intensified its ballistic strikes on Kyiv and Odesa, firing dozens of missiles—most of which could not be shot down due to a shortage of interceptors. Against this backdrop, a new European alternative is taking shape: Ukraine expects to receive a working prototype of the Freyja anti-missile system by mid-2027.
Deputy Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Davyd Arakhamia, who oversees the Freyja project, announced the timeline. The system is designed as a lower-cost alternative to the Patriot, built on an open architecture that allows integration of components from various manufacturers. “Because we are working under such tight time constraints, we have an ambitious goal: to have a ready MVP (minimum viable product) already in the first half of next year,” Arakhamia said. “This prototype will be able to demonstrate initial practical results.”
The anti-ballistic missile coalition overseeing Freyja was formally launched two weeks ago at a summit in Paris. Leaders from ten European countries attended, along with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Around a dozen defense companies also participated, many of which are expected to become partners in building the system. Zelenskyy noted that the project is a matter of testing and expressed hope to see Freyja operational within a year.
Partners and Technologies Behind Freyja
Ukraine is ready to contribute a launcher and an interceptor missile to the project, Arakhamia emphasized. Several prominent companies have joined the Freyja initiative, including Eurosam (maker of SAMP-T), Leonardo, Thales, and Saab. The lead industrial partner will be Ukraine's Fire Point, known for developing the Flamingo cruise missile. In September, Fire Point announced a deal with Germany's Hensoldt to supply radars for the system.
“The overall logic of this system is that it has an open architecture,” Arakhamia added. “So if Denmark says, ‘I want a Freyja system with a Danish Weibel radar,’ that’s fine. If Sweden says, ‘I want a Saab system,’ that’s no problem either.”
The coalition is also discussing the creation of a separate body or fund to manage contributions and ensure stable financing. “The coalition must be practical, not political,” Arakhamia stressed, highlighting the need for efficient collaboration to meet project goals.
Freyja’s open architecture is intended to maximize flexibility and adaptability, allowing integration of diverse technologies from various producers. If successful, the project could significantly reduce Ukraine's reliance on American systems, bolstering the country’s air defense amid the ongoing war with Russia.

Recently, seven nations joined forces in a coalition aimed at enhancing Ukraine's defense capabilities against ongoing threats, highlighting the urgency and collaborative efforts behind initiatives like Freyja.
