Shifting Global Leadership and Ukraine’s Security Role
In a recent New York Times piece, U.S. Army veteran David French argues that under President Donald Trump, America has surrendered its position as the champion of freedom and democracy, with Ukraine stepping into that void. French highlights that Ukraine has driven the war with Russia into a stalemate, emerging as an indispensable security ally for the West. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is showing how a post-American world can still protect its liberty and sovereignty.
Ukraine’s Military Strength and Criticism of Trump
French emphasizes that Ukraine now possesses the largest and most combat-ready army in the free world. The Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) may even surpass the U.S. military in ground combat and drone warfare. In his view, the moral and strategic core of defending liberal democracy now beats in Kyiv, not in Washington or other Western capitals. As French puts it:
'No nation can match American power, but for the first time in my adult life, the moral and strategic heart of defending liberal democracy does not beat in Washington.' - David French
Additionally, following the Ramstein meeting, Ukraine is set to receive over $5.5 billion in aid, with $4 billion allocated to strengthening air defenses and more than $1.5 billion for drones. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha noted that new military agreements have been signed with Gulf states, opening up fresh opportunities for cooperation.
French also criticizes Trump for deliberately damaging ties with allies, stating that Europe no longer believes the U.S. will become a reliable partner after Trump. 'I don’t think Americans fully grasp the enormous cost of Trump’s boasts and mistakes,' he writes. Meanwhile, escalating tensions in the Middle East have slowed negotiations on support for Ukraine, and the shortage of missiles for Patriot systems is becoming increasingly acute.
As a result, Ukraine has become a sought-after security partner and established a new global standing, proving it can play a pivotal role in international security. Ukraine’s key priorities include:
- strengthening air defense systems,
- advancing drone and missile programs,
- supplying the front lines with long-range munitions.
This underscores Ukraine’s growing importance in global politics and its ability to adapt to emerging security challenges. Amid worldwide instability, cooperation with Ukraine could become a crucial element for Western nations in maintaining regional stability and security.
As Ukraine strengthens its military alliances and enhances its drone capabilities, the geopolitical landscape continues to evolve. The recent shift in strategy not only highlights the growing support from new partners but also underscores the significant investments being made in advanced military technology.
