Ukraine has transitioned to daily drone attacks on Moscow: what does this mean

Ukraine has changed its tactics for strikes against Moscow, transitioning to daily drone attacks since the beginning of 2026. This new strategy has become noticeable against the backdrop of intensified military actions and an increase in the number of drones crossing the airspace of Russia.

By midnight on January 4, 2026, 57 drones had been shot down over the Moscow region, and a total of 437 units over the territory of Russia. In the past week, Russian air defense systems intercepted no less than 1548 Ukrainian drones attempting to penetrate Russian territory and the Crimean Peninsula. These attacks have led to significant consequences, including the temporary closure of airports in Moscow and dozens of other airports across Russia.

The impact of the new strategy on the situation in the country

The prolonged New Year and Orthodox Christmas holidays in Russia last until January 9, which may affect the overall situation in the country. Prominent Russian official Sergey Sobyanin confirmed numerous interceptions of drones, highlighting the seriousness of the situation and the increased activity of Ukrainian military forces.

“The shift to daily drone attacks on Moscow marks a new phase in the conflict that may have far-reaching consequences for both sides.”

This change in tactics may indicate the evolution of the war, in which drones become an important tool for achieving strategic goals. The increase in the frequency of attacks may also indicate the need for Russia to improve its air defense, which could lead to further intensification of military measures from both sides. In the context of prolonged holidays in Russia, such attacks may pose additional challenges for the authorities in ensuring security and stability in the country.
