Prisoner Swap and Military Operations

A prisoner exchange between Ukraine and the Russian Federation on May 15 brought home 205 Ukrainian military personnel and 4 civilians. Reports indicate that 95% of those returned had been captured in 2022, including members of the Azov unit. This swap marks a significant moment in the ongoing war.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian defense forces continue to target Russian military assets. Among the sites struck were:

  • A small missile boat and a minesweeper at the Caspian Sea base in Kaspiysk;
  • Ammunition depots near Yepifanovka and Rovenky;
  • A logistics warehouse in Raihorodka, Luhansk region;
  • An electronic warfare equipment storage in Dmytrivka;
  • An MR-232 Bussol-S radar station;
  • An optical-electronic module at an FSB coastal technical reconnaissance post;
  • A fuel and lubricants depot in Mariupol;
  • The Ryazansky oil refinery in Ryazan.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed the attack on the Ryazansky refinery, where a large fire was reported.

Domestic Situation and International Relations

Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) has obtained documents indicating Russia’s preparations for new missile and drone strikes on Ukraine. According to the intelligence, Russia is labeling targets as “decision-making centers,” which include nearly two dozen political hubs and military sites.

In the Khmelnytskyi region, an armed assault on police officers in the village of Terlivka resulted in one officer dead and another wounded. The attacker was neutralized by police special forces, highlighting law enforcement efforts against crime.

In Kyiv, rescue operations concluded in the Darnytskyi district following an attack on May 14. The operation lasted over 28 hours, during which more than 3,000 cubic meters of debris were cleared. The death toll was confirmed at 24, including three children, with 48 individuals injured.

On the international front, Russia is reportedly pressuring Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko to join operations against Ukraine and NATO. In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated:

“Of course, we have taken note of this information. But it is worth noting specifically for the Russian leadership that Ukraine is still not Russia. Unlike the aggressor country, where there is a clear author of this war and his long-standing circle that ensures his detachment from reality, the source of Ukraine’s defense is the willingness of the Ukrainian people to fight for their independence and their own sovereign state.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Additionally, the Anti-Corruption Court has imposed preventive measures on four more suspects in the “Dynasty” case. These developments occur against a backdrop of escalating tensions in Ukraine and its surroundings.

The May 15 prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia represents a crucial step in the humanitarian efforts accompanying the military conflict. The return of soldiers who endured long captivity may boost morale among Ukrainian forces. At the same time, active combat operations and strikes on Russian military sites underscore the conflict’s continuation and preparations for potential new escalations, including possible Russian missile attacks. This situation highlights the ongoing uncertainty and tension in the region, as well as the critical importance of international support for Ukraine during this challenging period.

The ongoing conflict continues to escalate, as evidenced by the recent intelligence reports revealing Russia's plans for renewed missile and drone strikes on Ukraine. This situation underscores the resilience of Ukrainian forces, which have engaged in a record number of clashes across multiple fronts.
