Ukraine Returned the Bodies of 261 Fallen
On August 13, 2026, Ukraine completed another repatriation operation, during which it returned the bodies of 261 fallen individuals. The Russian side claims these individuals are Ukrainian servicemen. The bodies were delivered to the country for further identification and examinations.
Organization of the Repatriation Process
The repatriation process was organized with the participation of several structures, including:
- Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War
- Joint Center of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU)
- Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU)
- Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA)
- Ombudsman Office of the Verkhovna Rada for Human Rights
- Secretariat of the Commissioner for Missing Persons in Special Circumstances
- State Emergency Service (SES)
- Other security and defense sector structures
After their return, the bodies of the deceased were transferred to specialized state institutions, where they were handed over to law enforcement and forensic experts for identification. Investigators and specialists from expert institutions will carry out the identification process to establish their identities.
It is also worth noting that in June 2025, Russia returned to Ukraine the bodies of those who died in extremely mutilated conditions. Additionally, during the last repatriations, alongside the fallen Ukrainians, the Russian Federation also handed over the bodies of occupiers. Experts and investigators were able to identify some of the names of Russian invaders whose bodies were handed over to Ukraine; one of them had been sought by their family after going missing in the Donetsk region.
Let us recall that during the first repatriation in 2026, Ukraine returned to Russia the body of its serviceman, which the Russian side had previously handed over as a body allegedly belonging to a Ukrainian defender.
The Ukrainian side expressed gratitude to the International Committee of the Red Cross for its assistance in conducting the repatriation, emphasizing the importance of cooperation in this humanitarian sphere.
This event represents an important stage in the repatriation process of the deceased, reflecting the efforts of both sides in the humanitarian aspect of the conflict. The identification of bodies and their return to families is crucial for completing the process of grief and loss.
