Prisoner Exchange on April 24
The Coordination Staff conducted a prisoner exchange on April 24, resulting in the release of 193 Ukrainian defenders from Russian captivity. This operation followed the earlier Easter exchange. Those returned included military personnel born in the 2000s, as well as soldiers who sustained injuries while carrying out their duties.
Most of the freed individuals had been held in Chechnya, and some faced fabricated criminal charges. The released group included:
- members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,
- the Navy,
- Territorial Defense Forces,
- the National Guard,
- the National Police,
- the State Border Guard Service,
- and the State Emergency Service.
A significant number of paratroopers were among the freed, along with soldiers, sergeants, and several officers.
Exchange Details
Those released had defended the country in the Luhansk, Donetsk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Kursk directions. The youngest of the freed is just 24 years old, having been captured on the Donetsk front in 2023. The oldest defender released is 60. Two servicemen will celebrate their birthdays on home soil.
The Coordination Staff stated that all freed individuals will undergo a full medical examination, receive rehabilitation support, and be eligible for financial compensation.
“We managed to bring back guys born in the 2000s, as well as wounded defenders,” the staff noted.It was also emphasized that most of the released were illegally detained in Chechnya.
