Prisoner Exchange in Ukraine
A significant prisoner exchange took place on June 5, bringing home 185 Ukrainian defenders and one civilian from Russian captivity. This was confirmed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Head of the Presidential Office Kyrylo Budanov. The swap was coordinated by the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, with crucial support from partners in the United States and the United Arab Emirates. Such exchanges have become a regular feature of the conflict, highlighting ongoing diplomatic efforts behind the scenes.
Freed Defenders
Those released include soldiers from the Armed Forces, National Guard, and State Border Guard Service, ranging from privates and sergeants to officers. These individuals defended key positions in Mariupol and the Azovstal steel plant, and fought in battles across:
- the Donetsk sector
- the Luhansk sector
- the Kharkiv sector
- the Kherson sector
- the Zaporizhzhia sector
- the Sumy sector
- the Kyiv sector
- the Kursk sector
Many of them had been held captive since 2022.
'Special gratitude goes to the warriors who replenish our exchange fund—through their strength and results on the front line, they ensure our people return home.'
Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Kyrylo Budanov added that 'after years of isolation, Ukraine's defenders see that our state stands strong and confident, and this realization gives them incredible strength.'
The freed group includes infantry, marines, paratroopers, territorial defense fighters, special operations forces, National Guard members, and border guards. This prisoner swap marks a key step in Ukraine's ongoing efforts to bring its citizens back from captivity.
The exchange underscores the importance of international support amid the conflict. The involvement of partners like the United States and the United Arab Emirates shows that securing the return of military and civilian captives remains a priority not only for the Ukrainian government but also for the global community. This process is vital for maintaining morale within the Ukrainian army and society, as it demonstrates the state's commitment to protecting its citizens.
This recent swap follows another significant release of Ukrainian soldiers, where 205 individuals were freed. Such exchanges not only highlight the ongoing efforts to bring home those held captive but also demonstrate the resilience and dedication of Ukraine in ensuring the safety of its defenders. The continuity of these operations underscores the importance of international alliances in this challenging period.
