Prisoner Exchange: Ukraine Secures Release of Hundreds from Russian Detention
Ukraine has successfully secured the release of 270 individuals held captive by Russia, comprising 261 military personnel and 9 civilians. The majority of those freed have been detained since 2022, many following the intense defense of Mariupol. This marks the third phase of a prisoner exchange operation that began on August 19, 2026. Among the released soldiers are five survivors of the July 2022 Olenivka attack and nine defenders suffering from serious illnesses.
Breakdown of Released Military Personnel
The freed servicemen come from a wide range of branches within the Armed Forces of Ukraine, including:
- National Guard
- State Border Guard Service
- Territorial Defense Forces
- Navy
- Ground Forces
- Airborne Assault Forces
- Special Operations Forces
- Military Law Enforcement Service
- State Special Transport Service
The group also includes a rescuer from the State Emergency Service. Some military captives were taken prisoner as early as 2018 and 2020.
These defenders fought across various fronts, including the Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Kherson, Kyiv, Mykolaiv, and Chernihiv regions. Additionally, personnel involved in defending the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant have returned home. Many of these servicemen faced fabricated criminal charges by Russia, with some sentenced to life imprisonment.
All released individuals will undergo medical examinations, receive treatment, essential supplies, financial aid, rehabilitation, and support to reintegrate into civilian life. The coordination headquarters expressed gratitude to the United States and the United Arab Emirates for their assistance in facilitating this exchange.
Among those freed is 74-year-old Stephen Hubbard, an English teacher from Izium, who had been unlawfully convicted and tortured by Russian forces. Two of the returned soldiers had been listed as missing since 2024, while another eight had been unaccounted for since 2025. Previous exchanges took place on August 24, 2026, when Ukraine repatriated 10 soldiers via Belarus, and on August 19, 2026, freeing 103 military personnel.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted the significance of the exchange, stating: 'Among those returning are five individuals who were believed to have died during the Russian attack in Olenivka in July 2022.'
This prisoner swap underscores the prolonged and complex nature of the conflict in Ukraine, as well as the crucial role of international cooperation in securing the release of Ukrainian citizens. The increasing frequency of such exchanges in recent years reflects ongoing diplomatic efforts to bring Ukrainian soldiers and civilians home from Russian detention.
In a related development, the recent prisoner exchange not only highlights Ukraine's ongoing efforts to secure the release of its citizens but also includes individuals previously thought to be lost.
