In an interview with Reuters, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha stated that Ukraine aims to accelerate peace talks with Russia, counting on U.S. mediation and the personal influence of former President Donald Trump. This diplomatic push comes as Ukraine continues to defend its sovereignty against a full-scale invasion. Several sensitive points in the proposed plan remain unresolved, particularly concerning territories and control over the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Kyiv has rejected Moscow's demands for new territorial concessions, insisting on the full return of the Zaporizhzhia plant to Ukrainian control.
Washington has proposed a new meeting in Miami, to which Kyiv has agreed. A key element of any potential agreement is security guarantees, and the United States has confirmed its readiness to participate in ceasefire monitoring mechanisms. A large-scale prisoner exchange has also recently taken place, adding a new dimension to the ongoing discussions.
International Partner Commitments
The United Kingdom and France have publicly committed to providing deterrence forces, with other nations also confirming their readiness to send troops to Ukraine. Andriy Sybiha, however, declined to name these other countries. The situation highlights the complex geopolitical stakes involved in the conflict. Ukraine has clearly stated it will never recognize Russian sovereignty over Crimea or Donbas, emphasizing that this is a matter of principle and a violation of international law. Sybiha noted that such recognition is not something Ukraine can ever consider.
