Easter Ceasefire Extension Proposed

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced that his country has formally proposed to Russia an extension of the current Easter ceasefire. This follows detailed discussions with Ukraine's military command. The initial Easter truce between Ukraine and the Russian Federation began at 16:00 on April 11 and is scheduled to last until the end of the day on April 12.

The official proposal from Ukraine urges that hostilities not resume after the holiday period. Security arrangements for Easter were a key topic in meetings with the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, and the leadership of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). The SBU has reported attempts by Russian forces to destabilize the situation within Ukraine in the lead-up to and during major religious holidays.

Efforts to Reduce Tensions

An extension of the quiet period after Easter could indicate efforts by both sides to de-escalate tensions and ensure the safety of civilians during the religious observance. However, given the history of failed peace initiatives in this conflict, the practical outcome will likely depend on each side's willingness to adhere to the truce terms and the absence of destabilizing actions by the aggressor. The proposal comes amid a war that has seen numerous short-lived ceasefires broken, often within hours of their declared start.

In light of the ongoing discussions surrounding the Easter ceasefire, it's worth noting that Putin has also ordered a ceasefire for 2026, following Zelenskyy's recent proposal. This development reflects a broader context of attempts to stabilize the region during significant religious observances, highlighting the complexities and challenges in achieving lasting peace amidst ongoing tensions.
