Ukraine Prepares Fresh Appeal to Allies
Ukraine is set to ask international partners for an additional $20 billion to bolster its defense capabilities. The official request will be presented on June 18 during a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in the Ramstein format. The funds sought are intended for:
- strengthening air defense systems,
- procuring long-range weapons,
- unmanned aerial vehicles (drones),
- ammunition and electronic warfare equipment.
In preparation for the meeting, talks have already taken place with representatives from Norway, Sweden, Germany, and Canada. Contributions from each partner nation are expected to range between $2 billion and $6 billion. The funding may come in the form of direct aid or loans. A portion of the money will go toward state purchases from Ukrainian defense manufacturers, as well as expanding contributions under Ukraine's Priority Needs List (Purl).
A senior official from Ukraine's Ministry of Defense stressed the urgency of the funding need, stating:
“Everyone sees that Russia is burning, and we want it to burn even more, but to do that we need funding.”The official also noted that “the window of opportunity has a tendency to close. Russia acts quickly and innovates. If we give it time to adapt again, we could lose the only real chance to end this war through meaningful negotiations.”
For context, the Ramstein group coordinates military aid to Ukraine and has been a key platform for pledges since 2022. Recent events underscore the stakes: on June 12, drones struck the Nizhnekamskneftekhim facility in Tatarstan, and a chemical plant, Tolyattikauchuk, in Russia's Samara region also came under attack.
