Ukraine Terminates Agreements with Russia, Belarus, and the CIS
In a decisive move to align its legal framework with the realities of war, Ukraine has terminated 116 interstate and intergovernmental agreements with Russia, Belarus, and within the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated that Ukraine has already withdrawn from most key treaties that bound it to the Russian Federation and Belarus. Specifically, 87 of the terminated pacts related directly to Ukraine's participation in the CIS, 23 agreements were with Belarus, 5 were bilateral treaties with the Russian Federation, and 1 trilateral agreement between Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus has been rendered void. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha emphasized the rationale behind this sweeping legal reset:
“I am firmly convinced that Ukraine’s treaty framework must correspond to the realities of war and the new security architecture on the European continent. To achieve this, we must sever the last legal threads that once tied us to Russia, Belarus, and the so-called CIS.”
Sybiha noted that the process of annulling these agreements is a 'thorough and complex legal procedure requiring sequential processing.' In a separate diplomatic matter, Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also commented on the case of detained Ukrainian citizens in India. The Ukrainian Embassy in the Republic of India has expressed serious concern over circumstances suggesting the case may be planned and politically motivated. Ukraine categorically rejects any insinuation of state involvement in supporting terrorist activity.
