Norway’s Role in Strengthening Ukraine’s Air Defense
Ukraine is turning to Norway for assistance in bolstering its air defense systems to counter the threat posed by Russian ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones. Ukrainian Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara recently spoke by phone with his Norwegian counterpart, Tore Sandvik, addressing the impact of recent Russian strikes on civilian infrastructure, including attacks in Kyiv. The discussion highlighted Ukraine’s urgent requirements for F-16 ammunition and man-portable air defense systems (MANPADS).
Norwegian Financial Aid to Ukraine
Norway commits roughly 1.3% of its GDP annually to support Ukraine, amounting to nearly $7 billion USD. In 2026, the country plans to contribute 1 billion Norwegian kroner through the EU’s Ukraine Facility, aimed at backing Ukrainian governmental bodies and reform initiatives.
Yevhen Khmara stated, “Ballistic missiles and jet drones represent the primary challenges to our airspace defense. Ukraine is actively developing its capabilities to counter these threats, with proven successes in downing jet-powered UAVs. At the same time, we continue to rely on ongoing support from our international partners.”
