Ukraine Calls for UN Security Council Meeting Amid Russian Escalation: Over 3600 Drones in Two Weeks

В Україні визнали загострення ситуації: війська противника активізували використання дронів.

Ukraine's Appeal to the UN Security Council

Ukraine has formally requested an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council in response to a severe escalation in Russian attacks. The country's Permanent Representative to the UN, Andrii Melnyk, submitted the official request on Tuesday, April 14th. The document was addressed to the current Security Council President, Bahrain's Permanent Representative Jamal Fares Al-Rowai, who holds the rotating presidency for April. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 20th.

Conflict Escalation

Over the past two weeks, Russia has launched more than 3600 attack drones, nearly 1350 guided aerial bombs, and over 40 missiles. These attacks have resulted in the deaths of at least 70 civilians. Furthermore, more than 2000 violations of the ceasefire regime have been recorded.

“In just the last two weeks, Russia has launched over 3600 attack drones, nearly 1350 guided aerial bombs, and over 40 missiles. These attacks have killed at least 70 civilians.”

Andrii Melnyk

Andrii Melnyk also emphasized that “the so-called Easter truce, demonstratively announced by Russian leader Vladimir Putin for just a day and a half, proved to be nothing more than a bluff within hours, as over 2000 violations of the ceasefire were recorded.”

Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, addressed the Security Council session, stating that “the EU's militaristic anti-Russian rhetoric is backed by concrete actions.” He noted that from February 2022 through 2025, European Union countries have increased their defense spending by almost 60%. In 2025, EU defense expenditures reached 381 billion euros. These figures underscore the gravity of the situation and the need for an international response to the aggression.

This development highlights the intensifying conflict between Ukraine and Russia, which continues to cause deep concern on the international stage. Ukraine's appeal to the UN represents an effort to mobilize the global community to respond to the ongoing military actions and the accompanying humanitarian crisis. The Security Council's subsequent actions could significantly influence international policy regarding the conflict and efforts toward its resolution. The meeting comes at a critical juncture, as sustained attacks threaten to further destabilize the region.

The upcoming meeting of the UN Security Council is crucial in light of Russia's recent intensified military actions. This escalation raises pressing questions regarding international security and the effectiveness of existing peace efforts.
