Ukraine Calls UN Security Council Meeting After Massive Attack Kills 8 in Kyiv

Україна звертається до Ради Безпеки ООН через новий трагічний інцидент, що забрав життя восьми людей у Києві.

UN Security Council Convened

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has called for an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council following a large-scale Russian assault on the night of May 14. According to the minister, Russia launched 675 drones and 56 missiles, including ballistic ones. At least 8 people were killed in Kyiv as a result of this attack, dozens were wounded, and around 20 are still missing.

The strike caused widespread destruction: 11 residential buildings in Kyiv were damaged, along with more than 50 across Ukraine. The hardest-hit areas include:

  • Shevchenkivskyi
  • Pecherskyi
  • Darnytskyi
  • Dniprovskyi
  • Obolonskyi
  • Solomianskyi
  • Desnianskyi
  • Sviatoshynskyi
  • Holosiivskyi

In the Darnytskyi district, part of a nine-story apartment building collapsed, and multi-unit residential buildings, commercial spaces, a business center, a car dealership, garages, and a parked car were also damaged.

International Response

Sybiha stressed that such a scale of Russian terror demands a strong international reaction. He stated:

“I have ordered the immediate convening of a UN Security Council meeting and the use of other international platforms to respond to Russia’s killing of Ukrainian civilians and attacks on humanitarian personnel.” - Andrii Sybiha

The minister urged all nations to respond to this aggression, emphasizing: “The world must see that Russia’s answer to all our constructive peace proposals is more terror and violence, and act accordingly.”

May 15 has been declared a Day of Mourning in Kyiv. Sybiha instructed all Ukrainian embassies to lower flags and open condolence books. On the same day, a visit by foreign ambassadors to the site destroyed in the attack is planned.

This situation highlights the severity of the threat posed by Russian aggression and the critical need for international support for Ukraine. Sybiha’s call to the UN Security Council underscores the demand for a global response to acts of aggression and human rights violations. As the conflict continues, such attacks could have far-reaching consequences not only for Ukraine but for international security as a whole.

The recent attack in Kyiv is part of a troubling pattern of aggression, as highlighted by Ukraine's call for a UN Security Council meeting in light of escalating Russian military actions. In just two weeks, over 3600 drones have been reported launched, intensifying the urgency for international intervention.
