Summit of the European Political Community
During the European Political Community summit held in Yerevan, Ukraine and the European Union agreed on financial support priorities for defense technology, with a major focus on unmanned aerial systems. The event, attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, established a payment schedule for the €90 billion European assistance package. The initial tranche will be allocated to joint drone production.
Security Cooperation Talks
Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that discussions covered the European support package, including the timeline for the first disbursement, which is earmarked for collaborative drone manufacturing. He also emphasized the need to advance the 'Drone Deal' with the EU and to explore details of potential security cooperation.
“We are preparing a plan of steps to build the necessary security infrastructure. I have given corresponding tasks to Chief of General Staff Andriy Hnatov, NSDC Secretary Rustem Umerov, and the diplomatic team at the Office,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
This summit marked the eighth gathering of the European Political Community, bringing together leaders from 48 states and governments. Notably, it was the first visit by a Ukrainian president to Armenia in 24 years. Armenia, a member of a military alliance with the Russian Federation, hosts a Russian military base on its territory. The event was held under the motto 'Building the Future: Unity and Stability in Europe,' highlighting European efforts to strengthen security and defense cooperation.
The summit underscores Ukraine's deepening integration into European defense frameworks and the critical role of international support for regional security. Joint drone production could become a key element in bolstering Ukraine's defensive capabilities, while also demonstrating the EU's readiness to engage more actively in security matters amid threats from Russia. European nations continue to seek ways to enhance security collaboration, a priority that has become increasingly urgent in light of current challenges.
As Ukraine strengthens its defense capabilities through the recent €90 billion drone deal, it also seeks to broaden its security alliances. This strategic move comes at a time when Ukraine is actively enhancing security dialogues with Middle Eastern and European partners, aiming to fortify its position in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
