Ukraine and Estonia Formalize Drone Deal Defense Agreement
On the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal signed a defense cooperation agreement under the Drone Deal framework. This pact makes Estonia the seventh country to join the initiative, which is designed to strengthen international collaboration in defense capabilities.
What the Agreement Includes
The Drone Deal format establishes a long-term defense partnership that covers:
- joint production;
- technology sharing;
- financial commitments;
- export of solutions.
Zelenskyy emphasized that the agreement not only accelerates cooperation between Ukraine and Estonia but also serves as a powerful signal of mutual trust.
“We are signing this deal with a very close friend, and that means a great deal. We will develop joint military production on the territory of both countries, including critical air defense systems,” the Ukrainian president stated.
National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov also highlighted the significance of the pact, noting that Ukraine continues to broaden its international defense partnerships.
“The Drone Deal now unites seven countries and is becoming a key tool for developing Ukraine's defense industry while enhancing partner security,” he said.
In June 2024, Zelenskyy signed a similar Drone Deal agreement with Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs, underscoring the initiative's ongoing expansion.
The Ukraine-Estonia Drone Deal reflects a surge in international defense cooperation amid the security challenges facing European nations. By growing this initiative, Ukraine stands to gain additional resources and technologies to bolster its defense capabilities—a critical need given the current regional situation. Estonia's involvement also highlights the increasing role smaller countries play in ensuring collective security across Europe, while further strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.
As Ukraine continues to strengthen its defense collaborations, the recent agreement with Estonia highlights a growing trend among Baltic nations to support Ukraine's military initiatives. This is further exemplified by Latvia's increased involvement in the PURL program, which aims to enhance defense capabilities in the region.
