Ukraine and Spain Deepen Food Sector Collaboration

Ukraine and Spain are intensifying their joint efforts to remove trade restrictions in the food industry. Recent meetings brought together Ukrainian officials and senior leaders from Spain’s regulatory agencies to discuss bilateral cooperation and support for Ukraine’s bid to become an observer in the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). This push reflects Ukraine’s broader strategy to align more closely with European regulatory frameworks.

During these talks, Ukraine’s Ambassador to Spain, Yuliia Sokolovska, and the Head of the State Service of Ukraine on Food Safety and Consumer Protection, Serhii Tkachuk, met with Spanish counterparts. These included the Executive Director of the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN), Ana María López-Santacruz Serraller, and the Director General for Agrifood Production Sanitation and Animal Welfare at Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Emilio Luis García Muro. The discussions centered on future opportunities for cooperation in food safety.

Priority Areas for Joint Action

The key areas identified for collaboration include:

  • Strengthening ties between relevant institutions;
  • Sharing expertise and methodologies;
  • Providing technical assistance.

A major focus was placed on backing Ukraine’s application for observer status in EFSA. Achieving this would mark a significant milestone, allowing Ukraine to play a more active role in European food safety regulation processes.

Overall, the partnership between Ukraine and Spain in the food sector holds strong potential for growth. It is expected to help dismantle trade obstacles and unlock fresh opportunities for both nations.

For Ukraine, this initiative is particularly valuable. Gaining observer status in EFSA would enable closer integration into Europe’s food safety system, potentially enhancing the quality and international competitiveness of Ukrainian products. Working with partners experienced in food safety regulation also supports Ukraine’s efforts to align its standards with European requirements—a crucial step toward deeper European Union integration.

As the collaboration between Ukraine and Spain strengthens, the upcoming trade forum in Madrid will present an excellent opportunity for Spanish businesses to explore Ukrainian food and drink products. This event not only highlights the growing partnership but also aims to enhance market access and foster economic ties between the two nations.
