Ukraine and Germany plan to expand cooperation in the defense sector

Ukraine and Germany announced their intention to enhance their defense cooperation, focusing on joint arms production, strengthening sanctions against Russia, and dealing with frozen Russian assets. In the framework of the already launched joint drone production, the parties presented the latest developments, including the strike drone Linza and the ground drone Termit. The meeting between Andrii Sybiha and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul was an important step in strengthening cooperation between the countries.

Main areas of cooperation

Among the main areas of cooperation, the following were also discussed:

  • A special package of sanctions aimed at reducing Russia's capabilities in ballistic missile production.
  • Management of frozen Russian assets amounting to over 200 billion euros.

Germany has already intensified its assistance by supplying Ukraine with air defense systems such as Patriot, IRIS-T, and Gepard.

In December 2025, Frontline Robotics and Quantum Systems announced the scaling of the Linza bomber drone production under the Build with Ukraine initiative. In April 2026, seven types of drones created through joint ventures between Ukraine and Germany were demonstrated to Volodymyr Zelensky and Friedrich Merz in Berlin, including six aerial drones and one ground robotic complex, Termit.

Andrii Sybiha noted: 'And once again, I will repeat, I am convinced that this cooperation will expand.'

He also emphasized that 'Germany is a leader in strengthening Ukraine's air defense, the systems provided by you save Ukrainian lives every day and night.' This highlights the importance and urgency of further developing bilateral relations in the security field.

The expansion of defense cooperation between Ukraine and Germany is an important step in the context of the current security situation in Europe. Joint arms production and discussions of new sanctions against Russia underscore the commitment of both countries to closer integration and joint action in combating aggression. Germany's support in the field of air defense also signifies the importance of international coordination in ensuring stability and security in the region.
