Key Energy Projects Emerge from Polish-Ukrainian Ministerial Talks
On February 2, 2026, Ukrainian Energy Minister Denys Shmyhal held an online meeting with his Polish counterpart, Miłosz Motyka. Minister Shmyhal expressed gratitude to Poland for its substantial humanitarian assistance. This aid includes 141 separate humanitarian shipments and a contribution of 3.1 million euros to the Ukraine Energy Support Fund. Shmyhal highlighted the particular value of a Polish public fundraising initiative for generators, calling it a demonstration of true friendship and humanity.
Focus on Energy Sector Cooperation
Regarding electricity, Shmyhal proposed accelerating work on the Rzeszów–Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant interconnector to increase transmission capacity. In the gas sector, the parties discussed enhancing cooperation within the so-called Vertical Gas Corridor. For the coal industry, the minister suggested forming an expert working group under the World Bank to support the development of clean coal generation.
It is noted that Ukraine's energy system is currently stabilized, yet it faces challenges from extremely cold weather and the aftermath of Russian shelling. In recent days, Russian forces have continued to attack energy facilities in frontline and border communities, though no targeted missile or Shahed-type drone strikes on energy infrastructure were recorded. Additionally, the Russian army is concentrating its actions on terror against Ukrainian logistics, particularly railways.
In a further sign of deepening ties, a major conference on Ukraine's recovery is scheduled to be held in Poland this year, underscoring the importance of bilateral cooperation in energy and humanitarian aid.
