On the eve of winter, Ukraine and Russia have exchanged blows on key oil and gas facilities. According to The Washington Post, while Russia previously primarily attacked Ukrainian energy infrastructure, Ukraine is now responding by targeting Russian oil refineries.
On Thursday, Ukrainian drones attacked an oil refinery in Bashkortostan, causing a large fire. On the same day, the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported a strike on one of the largest refineries in Volgograd, which resulted in the plant halting operations. On Saturday, targets included oil refineries in Saratov and Novokuybyshevsk.
Increased Russian pressure on the Ukrainian energy system
Russian forces have intensified their shelling of Ukrainian energy facilities. The attacks on gas infrastructure, which is the foundation of Ukraine's heating system, are of particular concern. The CEO of DTEK expressed concern about the potential large-scale attacks by Russian drones and their consequences.
Impact of Ukrainian attacks
President Zelensky emphasized the effectiveness of attacks on Russian oil facilities, which could significantly limit Russia's oil industry. Representatives of the Russian oil sector confirmed rising gasoline prices and possible reductions in production due to the strikes.
Challenges for Ukraine before winter
The CEO of Naftogaz reported a decrease in gas production and complete destruction of oil refining due to the attacks. Ukraine has signed contracts to cover about 95% of the country's gas needs, but experts warn of insufficient supplies during a harsh winter.
The conflict between Ukraine and Russia in the energy sector is becoming increasingly tense, with both sides ramping up attacks on key energy facilities. This could lead to serious consequences not only for both countries but for the entire region.
