EU Funds New Cross-Border Highway Linking Ukraine and Romania

Новий автобан з'єднає Україну та Румунію, зміцнюючи економічні зв'язки між країнами.

The 'Porubne – Siret' Infrastructure Project

Ukraine and Romania have formally agreed to synchronize the construction of high-speed roads on both sides of their shared border. The project, officially approved for the 'Porubne – Siret' corridor, will be financed by the European Union under its SAFE funding mechanism. This initiative is part of broader EU efforts to enhance connectivity and stability in Eastern Europe.

Key Project Details

  • On the Romanian side, the core component involves extending the A7 motorway (Suceava – Siret) to the state border line.
  • Ukraine has committed to modernizing its approach roads, specifically reconstructing its section from the border towards Chernivtsi into a dual two-lane carriageway.
  • The technical parameters of the roads and interchanges will be fully aligned with the Romanian A7 autobahn standards.

Work is also underway to expand the 'Porubne' border crossing point, with plans to increase the number of truck lanes by the end of this year.

As noted by Serhiy Derkach, 'The key is not only building the high-speed road from the Romanian side but also modernizing the Ukrainian approach roads. This is precisely what will eliminate bottlenecks and increase throughput capacity.'
By coordinating these efforts, both nations aim to significantly improve infrastructure connectivity, which is expected to boost economic ties. This project represents a strategic step in developing regional transport infrastructure, facilitating better logistics and stronger economic relations between Ukraine and Romania. The EU's investment in such projects underscores its commitment to supporting development and fostering Ukraine's integration into the European economic space.
