Slovakia and Ukraine Launch a New Border Crossing for Pedestrians
A new pedestrian border crossing between Ukraine and Slovakia has opened at the 'Uzhhorod – Vyšné Nemecké' checkpoint. This development stems from an intergovernmental agreement reached in the autumn of 2022 and became operational in early January 2026. In its first few days, nearly 4,000 people used the new facility, which simplifies travel between the two nations. This opening is part of ongoing efforts to modernize border infrastructure in Central Europe.
The formal Protocol to establish the pedestrian corridor was signed on October 17, marking a significant step in bilateral cooperation. As Serhii Derkach noted, the crossing addresses a clear public need:
“The pedestrian crossing in Uzhhorod is not a symbolic gesture, but a concrete response to a real demand from people.”
Future Plans and Upcoming Developments
Alongside the pedestrian crossing opening, authorities are discussing further upgrades for the region, including:
- Constructing a new passenger terminal to increase the checkpoint's capacity by 20%;
- Implementing joint customs and border control procedures to streamline the crossing process;
- Increasing the weight limit at the 'Malyi Bereznyi – Ubľa' crossing to 5 tons.
Overall, the new pedestrian link between Ukraine and Slovakia is expected to make travel significantly easier, offering more convenient and accessible conditions for citizens of both countries.
The inauguration of the 'Uzhhorod – Vyšné Nemecké' crossing represents a key milestone in bilateral relations. The signed protocol demonstrates a shared commitment to improving border procedures, which is likely to foster greater economic exchange and tourism in the region.
