Strengthening Ties in Migration and Asylum Between Sweden and Ukraine

Sweden and Ukraine are deepening their cooperation on migration and asylum matters. A delegation from the State Migration Service of Ukraine, led by First Deputy Head Iryna Kovalevska, recently completed a working visit to the Kingdom of Sweden. This visit marks the launch of a collaborative project between Ukraine’s State Migration Service and the Swedish Migration Agency, funded by Sweden’s Ministry of Justice throughout 2026. For an English-speaking audience, this partnership highlights Sweden’s ongoing support for Ukraine amid regional challenges, focusing on modernizing migration systems.

Workshop Topics and Mutual Commitment

As part of this project, the two countries will organize study visits and thematic workshops. These sessions will cover critical areas including:

  • cybersecurity
  • biometric technologies
  • personal data protection
  • use of EU information systems

A Swedish delegation has also traveled to Ukraine, underscoring a shared interest and commitment to advancing this partnership.

“We believe this visit is the first step toward building a productive and mutually beneficial collaboration that has only just begun.”

Annika Gottberg, a Swedish government representative, emphasized that “for the Swedish government, Ukraine remains a priority country, and we view Ukraine’s path to the EU as important both for Ukraine itself and for Europe’s stability. In this effort, migration and asylum issues play a key role. Modern, lawful, and efficient migration systems are crucial for Ukraine’s future EU membership.”

Ultimately, this Sweden-Ukraine collaboration on migration and asylum aims not only to raise standards in the field but also to support Ukraine’s integration into European structures. Strengthening ties in this area can enhance Ukraine’s international reputation and help shape an effective migration policy, which is especially vital given current security and social stability challenges in the region.
