Exhibition in Kyiv Marks 30 Years of Ukraine's Antarctic 'Vernadsky' Station

Виставка в Києві відзначає тридцяту річницю діяльності української станції Вернадський в Антарктиці.

Exhibition Showcases 'Ukraine in Antarctica: Research and Resilience'

A new exhibition titled 'Ukraine in Antarctica: Research and Resilience' has opened at the 'Sens' bookstore on Khreshchatyk Street in Kyiv. The free exhibition, which runs until March 1, celebrates the 30th anniversary of Ukraine acquiring the Antarctic research station 'Akademik Vernadsky'. This station is a key hub for Ukraine's ongoing polar research program.

The display features 30 photographs documenting the daily life and scientific work of expedition members. It also presents images of the research vessel 'Noosfera', Antarctic wildlife, natural phenomena, and the impacts of climate change. Among the physical artifacts on display are the actual cold-weather suits worn by Ukrainian polar researchers.

Historical Milestones and Future Endeavors

A key historical moment occurred on February 6, 1996, when the flags were officially changed over at the 'Akademik Vernadsky' station; the temperature near the station during the communication link was recorded at +1°C. Looking ahead, meteorologist Anzhelika Hanchuk is scheduled to lead the 31st Ukrainian Antarctic expedition to the station during the 2026-2027 season.

This exhibition not only highlights the significance of Ukraine's Antarctic research but also aims to popularize polar science with the public. Such events help draw attention to the critical issues of climate change and the importance of international scientific cooperation. The 30th anniversary of the 'Akademik Vernadsky' station serves as a reminder of Ukraine's achievements in this challenging field and points toward future prospects for Antarctic exploration.
