Ukraine Commits 2 Billion Hryvnias to Clear Farmland of Mines, Prioritizing Key Regions

Україна виділить 2 мільярди гривень на розмінування сільськогосподарських угідь, зосередившись на важливих територіях.

Decontaminating Ukraine's Agricultural Land

This year, Ukraine is allocating over 2 billion hryvnias to clear agricultural land of explosive hazards. The state's primary goal is to achieve a 90% clearance rate for farmland in its controlled territories by the end of 2026. This effort employs a comprehensive strategy, incorporating scientific analysis of soil conditions and an assessment of the extent of contamination.

The Critical Need for Agricultural Demining

Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture Taras Vysotsky emphasized the global importance of demining farmland, noting the world's limited supply of arable land.

"Therefore, every hectare available to us is crucial to restore," stated Taras Vysotsky.

Once again, state budget funds are being directed toward demining this year, with the total allocation exceeding 2 billion hryvnias.

In addition to national funding, Ukraine is receiving assistance from:

  • The European Union
  • The World Bank
  • The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)
  • The Government of Japan

The government plans to actively procure domestic automated demining systems.

"We are talking about using state funds to increasingly purchase domestic developments in automated demining systems, so they are available, if not in every community, then in every region within such brigades," explained Taras Vysotsky.

Consequently, Ukraine is advancing a strategy to restore farmland and ensure safety in its controlled territories by effectively utilizing state funds and international support. This work is vital for the nation's post-war recovery, as agriculture remains a cornerstone of the Ukrainian economy. These steps could significantly improve conditions in the agricultural sector, which is a critical component of the country's economy, especially in the context of post-war reconstruction.
