Ukrainian Defense Forces Score Gains in the South
In early 2026, Ukraine's Defense Forces reclaimed roughly 400 square kilometers of territory during an offensive in the southern region. A decisive factor behind this achievement was the disruption of Russian troops' access to Starlink satellite internet. Once they lost this service, the occupiers faced severe communication breakdowns, which significantly hampered their ability to command and coordinate units. According to U.S. intelligence sources and Bloomberg, Washington views the Starlink system as a critical asset exclusively for Ukrainian military operations.
Frontline Dynamics and the Role of Technology
The United States and SpaceX collaborated to block channels allowing the Russian army to use Starlink. Despite the Ukrainian military's success, this move did not trigger a major turning point on the battlefield. Russia continues its offensive campaigns on several other fronts. Moreover, the country is advancing development of its own Starlink alternative, with Russian forces already testing prototype signal-boosting devices.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov stated, 'Starlink terminals used by Russian military personnel have been blocked.'
He added, 'The first batch of terminals on the whitelist is already operating stably,' and 'the lists themselves are updated once a day.' A large-scale verification of Starlink equipment is underway in Ukraine. Civilian users must undergo verification through Administrative Services Centers (TsNAPs), while for legal entities, the verification service is planned to launch on the Diia portal.
Russian military Telegram channels reported deteriorating unit management and loss of situational awareness after being cut off from Starlink.
These events highlight the critical role of technological resources in modern military conflicts, where control over communications can determine the outcome of operations. Losing access to Starlink dealt a serious blow to Russian forces, who had relied on the service for action coordination. However, the situation on the front remains challenging, as Russian forces continue active offensives in other regions. This underscores the need for Ukraine to remain vigilant and adapt its strategies amid constantly shifting circumstances.
