Ukraine's Consulate Opens in Dunedin
Ukraine has inaugurated its most distant diplomatic mission from Kyiv in the city of Dunedin, located on New Zealand's South Island. The new consulate, situated approximately 18,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian capital, will be headed by Olena Grabb. She has outlined her background and her plans to foster institutional cooperation between Ukraine and New Zealand. This expansion of diplomatic presence occurs as Ukraine seeks to strengthen international ties amidst ongoing conflict.
Olena Grabb is an art consultant and co-founder of Magenta Art Books. A graduate with honors from the Law Faculty of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, she specialized in constitutional and administrative law. Her academic credentials also include a British Council grant and studies in international commercial arbitration at the University of Edinburgh. Grabb brings 15 years of experience as a lawyer and completed the 'Art Business' program at Sotheby's Institute of Art, graduating with distinction for her thesis on 'The Emotional Value of Art'.
Olena Grabb was appointed to her consular role by Ukraine's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Andrii Ivanovych Sybiha. It is noteworthy that Dunedin is a designated UNESCO City of Literature. Currently, New Zealand does not have a specific refugee assistance program for Ukrainians, and the special visa scheme for Ukrainian entry into the country has been discontinued.

Among Grabb's key objectives are developing institutional partnerships between government bodies, collaborating with Ukrainian UNESCO Cities of Literature and the Ukrainian Book Institute, and implementing large-scale projects to secure grants. Concurrently, Ukrainian communities across New Zealand are actively organizing regular rallies, cultural events, and bake sales featuring traditional Ukrainian cuisine to raise funds in support of Ukraine.
