Ukraine Withdraws from U-15 World Cup in Azerbaijan Over Russia's Inclusion and Tournament Format

Україна відмовилась від участі в ЧС U-15 в Азербайджані через присутність Росії та формат змагань.

Ukraine Pulls Out of U-15 Football World Cup

Ukraine has decided not to participate in the upcoming U-15 Football World Cup scheduled in Azerbaijan. The choice stems from concerns about the tournament’s structure and sporting considerations. The event drew widespread attention after extending invitations to all 211 FIFA member associations, including Russia, which has led to boycotts by 18 European nations along with the United States.

Tournament Format and Ukraine’s Alternative Plans

This U-15 World Cup features an 8-a-side format with 20-minute halves and the possibility of multiple matches in a single day. Conversely, Ukraine’s U-15 national team competes in the traditional 11-a-side format and regularly participates in UEFA-sanctioned competitions. Instead of attending the Azerbaijan event, Ukraine’s youth squad plans to join a separate tournament in Turkey, facing teams from Portugal, Denmark, the Netherlands, and others.

Russia’s U-15 team will be making its first appearance in an international tournament since being banned from global competitions. The Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) only learned about Russia’s participation after deciding to withdraw. "Upon discovering Russia’s invitation, UAF promptly informed UEFA member countries that Russia was included in the event. Some nations responded by refusing to attend, while others agreed to participate but pledged not to compete against Russia," UAF representatives explained.

Several European countries have confirmed their refusal to take part in the U-15 World Cup, including:

  • Ukraine
  • Germany
  • Netherlands
  • Austria
  • Belgium
  • Denmark
  • Norway
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • Romania
  • Serbia
  • Slovenia
  • Finland
  • Iceland
  • Armenia
  • Faroe Islands
  • Liechtenstein
  • San Marino

UAF expressed gratitude toward these European football federations for standing united with Ukraine and supporting the stance to exclude Russian football. They highlighted that "due to this collective unity, Russia remains suspended from all official UEFA and FIFA competitions."

Ukraine’s and other European countries’ withdrawal underscores the ongoing international isolation of Russian sports amidst current geopolitical tensions. In Europe’s present political climate, collective decisions and solidarity in excluding Russia from sporting events are vital for upholding the integrity of fair play. Meanwhile, Russia’s participation in other international competitions continues to spark debate regarding its impact on global sports policies. The Ukrainian Football Association is committed to fostering continued international cooperation to prevent Russia’s reintegration into official tournaments.
