Deploying Specialists to the Baltics
Ukraine is exploring the dispatch of expert teams to the Baltic states to bolster airspace security against drone incidents. This initiative follows a directive from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha confirmed that these groups would assist Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania in enhancing their aerial safety measures.
Ukraine denies intentionally directing drones toward Latvia or any other allied nation. Sybiha stated:
'Ukraine has never directed drones toward Latvia or other allies.'At the same time, Kyiv has apologized to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Finland for unintentional incidents in recent days. Ukrainian officials are also considering the possibility that Russian electronic warfare systems may be deliberately diverting drones off course.
NATO Airspace Incidents
Several drone incursions have been recorded in the airspace of NATO member states bordering Ukraine and Russia. Notably, drones have crashed on the territories of Latvia and Romania. On May 7, Latvia reported a violation of its airspace by Russian drones, two of which landed within its borders. These intruding drones were not shot down due to the risk they posed to civilians and civilian infrastructure.
In response, Latvia's parliament, the Saeima, urgently convened a session of its National Security Committee to address the situation. For Ukraine, maintaining regional stability and ensuring the safety of its allies remains critical amid ongoing threats from Russia.
