Danylo Hetmantsev Comments on the New Banknote
Danylo Hetmantsev, head of the parliamentary committee on finance, tax, and customs policy, has weighed in on the upcoming 2,000 hryvnia banknote, which will enter circulation on September 4, 2026. He stated that there are currently no grounds for fueling inflationary pressures in Ukraine, as the country’s gold and foreign currency reserves remain robustly high, and the balance of payments deficit is not critical thanks to support from international partners. Hetmantsev also emphasized the resilience of Ukraine’s banking system and its moderate debt burden.
According to Hetmantsev, introducing higher-denomination banknotes traditionally generates negative inflation expectations among both businesses and the public. However, he expressed confidence that the National Bank of Ukraine has accounted for these risks, and they should not undermine the regulator’s rationale for issuing the new 2,000 hryvnia note.
'Despite the ongoing large-scale war, now in its fifth year, Ukraine maintains macrofinancial stability. The National Bank—at least the part responsible for these matters—is a professional regulator and a strong, independent institution,' stated Danylo Hetmantsev.
Design and Significance of the New Banknote
The obverse of the new banknote will feature a portrait of poet Vasyl Stus, while the reverse will depict the philology faculty building of Vasyl Stus Donetsk National University. This initiative is part of the National Bank of Ukraine’s ongoing policy to modernize the country’s currency in circulation.
The introduction of the 2,000 hryvnia note reflects Ukraine’s efforts to preserve macrofinancial stability amid the economic challenges brought on by the war. This move may also shape consumer sentiment and investment decisions, as new denominations can alter perceptions of inflation risk. It is crucial that the National Bank continues to clearly communicate its decisions and strategies to maintain public and business trust in the national currency.
To further enhance public awareness about the upcoming banknote, the Central Bank of Ukraine has launched a dedicated platform that provides comprehensive information about the new 2,000 hryvnia note. This initiative aims to educate citizens on its features and significance, ensuring a smooth transition into circulation.
