Centralized Acquisition of Advanced Fragmentation Suits for Ukraine’s Military
For the first time, Ukraine is undertaking a large-scale, centralized procurement of 4,700 fragmentation suits intended for the Armed Forces. The total contract value exceeds 186 million hryvnias. Each suit weighs approximately 2 kilograms and is engineered to shield soldiers from shrapnel and bullets while ensuring full mobility. The technical requirements for these protective suits were finalized and approved in May 2026. This procurement process is managed by the Defense Procurement Agency (DPA) under the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
Suit Composition and Unique Features
The fragmentation suit set includes:
- a specialized jacket;
- matching trousers;
- pteruges equipped with an adjustable belt and seven sections containing soft ballistic panels (two frontal, four lateral, and one rear).
Notably, this design has no equivalent within NATO countries. Field testing involved service members requiring high agility and rapid movement, confirming the suit’s effectiveness without compromising mobility.
Mstyslav Banik, a representative of the Ministry of Defense, stated: “Our priority at the Ministry is to respond directly to the needs of our troops and provide equipment that truly supports them. Before launching this centralized procurement, the Technical Specifications were developed and approved by the Logistic Command of the Armed Forces.”
This initiative marks the first centralized acquisition of fragmentation suits for Ukraine’s military. In addition, the Defense Procurement Agency has secured 40,000 tactical headsets for 2026. Since the beginning of 2026, drone contracts have increased by 300% compared to 2025. These projects demonstrate an intensified focus on upgrading military capabilities and enhancing soldier protection.
Acquiring these fragmentation suits is a crucial step in safeguarding Ukrainian soldiers amid ongoing combat operations. The expanding investment in defense technologies reflects the government’s commitment to modernizing the armed forces and improving logistical support under current security challenges. This strategic direction is essential for maintaining combat readiness and strengthening Ukraine’s defense infrastructure.
This centralized procurement aligns with the recent overhaul of Ukraine’s arms acquisition strategy, which has freed up significant funds to address the military's urgent requirements. As reported, the Defense Ministry has restructured its procurement processes, enabling a more efficient allocation of resources to enhance the capabilities of the Armed Forces.
