Ukraine’s National Report under UN Sustainable Development Goal Indicator 6

For the first time, Ukraine has submitted its National Report on UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Indicator 6, which evaluates the extent of cross-border cooperation in water management. This submission was made through a unified online platform, reflecting a modernized approach to reporting in this field. The findings will be used in preparations for the UN Water Conference, scheduled to take place in late 2026 in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. (SDG indicator 6.5.2 specifically tracks the level of transboundary water cooperation among nations.)

Ukraine’s Active Engagement in International Collaboration

In addition, Ukraine remains actively involved in the governing bodies of the Convention on the Protection and Use of Transboundary Watercourses and International Lakes. As part of its participation, the country serves on the Convention’s Bureau, promotes a basin-based approach to water management, fosters international partnerships, and fulfills its obligations regarding the protection of transboundary waters.

This report marks a significant milestone for Ukraine in the realm of international water cooperation. It demonstrates the country’s commitment to adhering to UN standards and adopting innovative water management strategies. Preparing for the UN Water Conference will serve as a platform for exchanging experiences and strengthening partnerships to address global challenges related to water resources and their use.

As Ukraine enhances its international cooperation on water management, it is also taking significant steps domestically. The Ministry of Economy has initiated public consultations on a comprehensive water management strategy aimed at 2036. This initiative aligns with Ukraine's commitment to sustainable development and highlights the importance of integrating local strategies with international efforts.
