Carpathian Nations Unite in Ukraine for Historic Summit

For the first time, Ukraine is hosting the summit of Carpathian countries, taking place in the Ivano-Frankivsk region. This gathering marks the launch of a new collaborative framework known as the Carpathian Eight (C8). The initiative brings together seven nations from the region:

  • Romania
  • Serbia
  • Poland
  • Slovakia
  • Czech Republic
  • Austria
  • Hungary

Alongside these countries, the European Union is also represented as a distinct participant.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky highlighted the summit’s role in uniting the countries, regions, and communities of the Carpathian area. On his Telegram channel, he emphasized the significance of this new cooperative format:

“Today, here in Ukraine, within our part of the Carpathians, we are hosting a summit that brings together all Carpathian states, regions, and communities of our countries. We are launching a new platform – the Carpathian Eight – which connects us and our neighbors across Europe.”
- Volodymyr Zelensky

Objectives and Impact of the Carpathian Eight

The Carpathian Eight aims to strengthen security, energy cooperation, logistics, cross-border economic ties, and community support. President Zelensky also expressed his enthusiasm for welcoming the leaders and delegates of the member countries:

“I am pleased to greet the leaders and representatives of the Carpathian Eight here in Ukraine’s Ivano-Frankivsk region.”
- Volodymyr Zelensky

This new alliance has the potential to significantly enhance political and economic stability across the region. By collaborating on energy and security issues, member countries can better address shared challenges and deepen their connections. Moreover, the involvement of the European Union in the initiative is expected to boost investment and infrastructure development in the Carpathian countries, ultimately improving the quality of life for local communities. The Carpathian Mountains, spanning multiple Central and Eastern European nations, are a vital natural and cultural area whose development is essential for regional prosperity.

As the Carpathian Eight initiative gains momentum, regional leaders are making significant moves to enhance collaboration. Notably, Serbian President Vučić's visit underscores the commitment of member countries to this integration effort, further solidifying the bonds among the Carpathian nations.
