Remembering the Young Lives Lost to War
On June 4, Ukraine observes a day of remembrance for children who have died as a result of armed aggression by the Russian Federation. This commemoration was officially established by a resolution of the Verkhovna Rada in 2021. To date, 707 children have been killed, 2,548 wounded, and 2,318 remain missing across the country. In the Kyiv region alone, since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, 42 children have died and 71 have been injured.
As part of the remembrance ceremony, 42 small angel figurines and bells were hung on a memorial tree. The bells represent the voices of children silenced by Russian brutality, while the angels symbolize those who have become premature heavenly guardians.
“Behind every number is a life cut short, dreams unfulfilled, stories untold, lullabies unsung, and parents’ broken hearts.”

Investigating Crimes Against Children
Authorities are currently pursuing more than 6,000 criminal cases related to offenses against children committed as a result of Russian aggression. According to Ruslan Kravchenko, “today we are investigating over 6,000 criminal proceedings concerning crimes against children and in the field of child protection.”
Among those killed are children with heartbreaking stories. The youngest victim was just two days old—born and died in a maternity hospital. Today, the nation honors all children whose lives were taken too soon by this war.
This day of remembrance highlights the tragic impact of war on the most vulnerable. The toll on children underscores severe humanitarian challenges that demand urgent action. Investigating these crimes and holding perpetrators accountable are essential steps toward justice and rebuilding trust in state institutions during wartime.
As Ukraine mourns the loss of its youngest victims, it is crucial to understand the broader implications of these tragedies. The ongoing investigation into the crimes committed against children sheds light on the urgent need for accountability and justice.
