Protests in Iran began in late 2022 and have entered their 14th day. In the first 13 days of protests, at least 2,311 people have been arrested, indicating the scale of repression. Rallies have taken place in 512 locations in 180 cities and towns. At the same time, reports indicate that between 45 and 65 individuals have died during the protests, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
The Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, commented on the protests on January 3, 2023, stating that
"the rebels should be put in their place"and noted that dialogue with them is futile.
Andriy Sybiga, representative of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasized the importance of protecting the rights and freedoms of the Iranian people, stating that
"the Iranian people deserve to have their fundamental civil rights protected, including access to information and freedom of assembly". Such statements demonstrate Ukraine's readiness to support Iranians in their aspirations for change and justice.
