Ukraine Requests Talks with Putin
Kyiv has formally asked for a meeting with Vladimir Putin at the upcoming G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, France. The Ukrainian side wants the discussions to take place in a broad format, with the leaders of the United States and the European Union present. President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that
“Trump and Macron will be there, so Europeans plus America. This is a good opportunity for all of us to meet together.”
Attacks and Their Aftermath
While these diplomatic efforts are underway, Russian forces launched a major overnight assault on Ukrainian cities on June 15, with Kyiv as the primary target. The strikes damaged at least five structures within the National Kyiv Pechersk Lavra reserve and set fire to the Stepanivskyi annex of the Dormition Cathedral. Russia’s Defense Ministry later issued an official statement about the attack, but its command ignored the destruction of religious sites, claiming instead that the strikes hit military targets.
The shelling destroyed civilian infrastructure, sparked fires, and caused deaths and injuries among the local population. This situation highlights the intense complexity and tension that accompany Ukraine’s diplomatic outreach to Russia.
Ukraine’s request to meet with Putin at the G7 summit reflects Kyiv’s desire for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, even as violence escalates. Russia’s military actions—including the bombardment of Kyiv—signal a continuation of aggressive policies that complicate any potential negotiations. Given this backdrop, it is crucial for the international community, particularly the U.S. and the EU, to back Ukraine in its pursuit of peace and stability in the region.
As Ukraine intensifies its diplomatic outreach, the recent agreement between Trump and Zelenskyy to meet at the G7 summit underscores the significance of high-level dialogues in addressing ongoing conflicts. This meeting could provide a vital platform for Ukraine to reinforce its position and seek support from key global leaders amidst the escalating violence from Russia.
