Ukraine Deploys New Drone Command System to Counter Iranian-Made 'Shahed' UAVs

Ukraine's Minister of Digital Transformation, Mykhailo Fedorov, has signed an order to launch a 'Mission Control' drone management system within the Delta combat ecosystem. This move comes as Roman Kostenko, Secretary of the Ukrainian Parliament's Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence, has called for the destruction of Iranian-supplied 'Shahed' kamikaze drones before they can cross into Ukrainian airspace. These drones are a persistent threat, often used in attacks on civilian infrastructure.

Kostenko stressed that Ukrainian forces must prevent 'Shahed' drones from being shot down over major cities like Kyiv, Odesa, or Kherson. He emphasized that the UAVs should be destroyed at the border, within a kilometer or two, and must not reach Ukrainian population centers.

“The issue is simply a lack of these air defense assets,” Kostenko added, highlighting the urgent need to improve Ukraine's air defense capabilities.

Economic Impact and Operational Innovations

Kostenko also pointed to the economic dimension, stating it is crucial to make it cost-prohibitive for Russia to launch these drones. Under the new command system, each drone crew will now be required to log data into Mission Control, including the type of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), its launch point, flight path, and mission objective. These innovations are designed to significantly enhance the effectiveness of counter-drone operations.

The launch of Mission Control represents a critical step in strengthening Ukraine's air defense amid the growing threat from UAVs. Destroying drones on their approach to the border can substantially reduce risks to civilians and critical infrastructure. The adoption of advanced drone management technology underscores Ukraine's commitment to continuously improving its defensive capabilities during the ongoing war.
