Ukraine increased coke imports by 3.2%: 94% of supplies come from Poland

В Україні спостерігається зростання імпорту коксу з Польщі, де поставки досягли 94% від загальної кількості.

Coke Imports in Ukraine in 2025

In January-November 2025, Ukraine increased coke and semi-coke imports by 3.2% to 642.8 thousand tons. The main supplier of this raw material was Poland, which accounted for 94% of all import supplies. In particular, 602.01 thousand tons of coke were imported from Poland to Ukraine. Additionally, 27.67 thousand tons and 13.06 thousand tons were received from Indonesia and the Czech Republic, respectively.

State of the Coke Industry

It should be noted that coke coal production in Ukraine has significantly declined, particularly by 74% from 2013 to 2024. Coke production has also decreased by nearly 85%. According to estimates, Ukraine needs about 3.2 million tons of coke per year to maintain its current production level. Currently, 64% of mines and coke enterprises remain in uncontrolled territories, complicating the situation in the market.

In January 2025, the company 'Metinvest' suspended the operation of the Pokrovsk Coal Group. It is known that 'Metinvest' also facilitated the evacuation of employees of this group and their families, highlighting the complexity of the situation in the sector.

The increase in coke imports in Ukraine occurs against the backdrop of a significant decline in domestic production, emphasizing the country's dependence on external supplies. Problems in the coke industry are caused not only by military conflicts but also by a prolonged economic crisis that has negatively affected infrastructure.

Given this situation, it is important for Ukraine to find alternative sources of supply and ways to restore domestic production to ensure market stability and industrial needs.
