Updated Law 'On Grapes, Wine and Vine Growing Products'
Starting from January 1, 2026, the updated Law 'On Grapes, Wine and Vine Growing Products' will come into effect in Ukraine. This law aims to harmonize national standards with European ones, which, according to experts, can significantly influence the development of the winemaking industry in Ukraine.
Key Innovations of the Law
One of the key innovations is the introduction of official protection for geographical indications (GI). This will create favorable conditions for the development of regional brands, increase the recognition of Ukrainian wines, and strengthen their positions in both domestic and international markets, notes the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection. Protected geographical indications will become an important tool for winemakers in promoting their products.
In addition, a single state database will be created under the new law, known as the 'Grapes and Winemaking Register'. This database aims to systematize information about winemaking enterprises, which will contribute to increasing transparency in the industry.
Updating quality, classification, and labeling requirements for winemaking products is also an important aspect of the new legislation. This will ensure higher quality standards for products and make it easier for consumers to choose, as they will receive clearer information about the wine they purchase.
Thus, the new law, which will come into effect in 2026, promises significant changes for the winemaking industry in Ukraine, which may positively influence its development and competitiveness.
The implementation of the updated legislation in the winemaking sector reflects Ukraine's aspirations to integrate into the European space, which can be an important step towards enhancing the quality and competitiveness of Ukrainian wines.
