In Ukraine, the new school year for over 3.5 million students started on September 1. Nearly 2.3 million children returned to in-person learning, while the number of students in distance learning decreased by more than one hundred thousand compared to last year. This was reported by Prime Minister Julia Svyrydenko.

Features of learning in the new year

According to the chairman of the parliamentary committee on education, science, and innovation, Serhiy Babak, currently about 10% of Ukrainian children study remotely or in other forms. Among them, over 300 thousand are abroad and more than 35 thousand are in temporarily occupied territories.

This year, about 12 thousand schools will operate in Ukraine. Of these, more than eight thousand function in a traditional format, two and a half thousand in a mixed format, and one and a half thousand continue to work exclusively remotely. As previously noted by Deputy Minister of Education and Science Nadia Kuzmychova, the highest number of distance learners is in Kharkiv, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions.

Despite the challenges of war, the educational network continues to develop. Minister of Education and Science Oksen Lisovyi reported that 56 relocated schools are operating in the country. 'Today, 4 relocated schools from Donetsk are opening their doors for children in new cities. In total, 56 relocated schools across the country – this means that children remain in their school community,' he emphasized.

Safety measures in schools

In addition, the government has announced new safety measures. By the end of 2026, it is planned to open 203 additional shelters in educational institutions, reported Julia Svyrydenko.

The new school year in Ukraine began with a large number of students returning to schools. Of the total number of students, 10% study remotely, which requires additional measures to ensure quality education for all. The government is also actively addressing safety issues in educational institutions, striving to ensure safe learning and development for students and teachers.
