Nearly 40 Nations Asked by Ukraine to Supply Patriot Missiles

Україна звернулася до 40 країн з проханням про надання систем протиповітряної оборони.

Ukraine Reaches Out to Global Allies

Ukraine has formally requested that nearly 40 partner nations donate Patriot interceptor missiles from their existing stockpiles. Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov dispatched letters urging these countries to contribute through the PURL and JUMPSTART mechanisms. This appeal is part of Kyiv’s broader strategy to strengthen its air defenses amid Russia’s ongoing invasion.

Separately, Ukraine has for the first time launched a procurement process for roughly a hundred Patriot missiles. The deal, valued at around $1 billion, will be financed through a European Union loan. Deliveries from European partner warehouses have already begun this year, highlighting the active international support for Ukraine’s defense sector.

Patriot System Performance and the Situation in Kyiv

The effectiveness of Patriot systems in intercepting Russian Iskander missiles has more than doubled, underscoring their critical role in protecting Ukrainian airspace. Despite these efforts, on the night of July 2, 2026, Russian forces attacked Kyiv, resulting in casualties and injuries.

  • Three men were wounded in the strike, two of whom were hospitalized.
  • Russia used attack drones and air-, ground-, and sea-launched missiles, destroying a warehouse belonging to the Moyo retail chain.

Kyiv declared a day of mourning on July 3 in response to the tragedy. Ukraine’s Defense Ministry emphasized that

“these are the fastest and most reliable ways to supply the necessary Patriot missiles. It is critically important to make a decision ahead of the NATO summit.”
As tensions escalate in the region, Ukraine continues to actively bolster its defensive capabilities and rally international support.

Ukraine’s requests for Patriot missile transfers from allies and its new procurement of missiles reflect the severity of the threat posed by Russian aggression. The improved performance of the Patriot system and the surge in international backing demonstrate the importance of collective efforts to ensure regional security. At the same time, the recent attack on Kyiv highlights the persistent danger and the urgent need for measures to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capacity.

In light of Ukraine's recent appeal for missile donations, the country is also taking significant steps to enhance its defense capabilities by directly contracting for PAC-3 missiles. This move marks a pivotal development in Ukraine’s efforts to secure advanced weaponry for its Patriot systems, ensuring a more robust response to ongoing threats.
