The Cemetery Theft Came Back to Haunt: Amazing Detention of a Ukrainian at the Border
The Past Reminded Itself at the Polish Border
On August 13, a 64-year-old citizen of Ukraine was detained at the border crossing 'Nizhkivtsi - Malhovice'. During the document check, it was revealed that Italy had issued a European arrest warrant for the man for theft committed in 2013. He is accused of stealing copper roofing sheets from the cemetery along with other individuals, the value of which amounted to approximately 10,000 euros.
The detained individual was temporarily arrested by court order. According to Italian law, he faces up to three years in prison. The incident serves as yet another confirmation of how the past can unexpectedly remind one of itself in modern life.
This case illustrates the difficulties faced by Ukrainian citizens with criminal records abroad. Detention at the border can have serious consequences for an individual, even if the crime was committed many years ago. Such incidents raise questions about international law and cooperation between countries on issues of extradition and justice.
