From January 16, 2026, changes to the citizenship law began to take effect in Ukraine, which simplify the procedure for children of Ukrainian citizens born abroad, particularly in Poland. The new rules apply to children born after this date, provided that both parents had Ukrainian citizenship at the time of birth. This is reported by inPoland.
The embassy of Ukraine in Poland announced the introduction of the changes. They are intended to reduce bureaucratic procedures and facilitate access to Ukrainian documents for families living abroad.
Simplification of citizenship for children of Ukrainians
According to the updated regulations, for children born in families of Ukrainian citizens, the separate procedure for registering citizenship by birth has been abolished. Parents no longer need to submit an additional application or obtain a special certificate of registration as a citizen of Ukraine.
For the first issuance of a foreign passport, it is sufficient to submit:
- the originals of the documents confirming the identity of the parents;
- documents confirming the citizenship of Ukraine of both parents.
New rules for consulate operations
The procedure for making appointments at consular institutions has also been changed. In the electronic queue, it is now necessary to register only for one consular action - the issuance of a citizen passport of Ukraine for traveling abroad. The separate registration service for Ukrainian citizenship by birth for this category of children no longer applies.
The changes are expected to reduce the burden on consulates and speed up the issuance of documents for Ukrainian families abroad.
Let us remind you that the Security Service of Ukraine will check applicants for Ukrainian citizenship from certain countries.
