Mobile Connectivity Challenges in Ukraine
Published: Sunday, July 5, 2026, 11:30 AM. Mobile users in Ukraine sometimes see the letter E on their screen instead of 4G or 5G, causing internet speeds to drop dramatically. This indicates the phone has switched to the outdated EDGE network due to a lack of fast coverage in the area. EDGE, short for Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution, is a data transmission technology that operates within second-generation network standards. Its maximum speed is around 384 Kbps, enough only for basic text-based web browsing.
When the E symbol appears, it means the smartphone has lost access to 4G or 5G and connected to the weakest available signal. In this mode, videos won't load, and apps run with noticeable delays. The most common cause is poor or absent modern network coverage in a specific location. This often happens in:
- basements;
- rural areas outside cities;
- dense urban developments;
- during power outages affecting base stations.
Technical maintenance by carriers, local outages, or damaged infrastructure can also be factors. In some cases, incorrect network settings on the phone itself are to blame.
Steps to Restore Fast Internet
To get back to high-speed internet, first try toggling airplane mode on and off, or restart your device. This forces the phone to reconnect to the network and often restores 4G or 5G. On an iPhone, go to mobile data settings and select LTE or 5G under data options. On Android, set 4G/5G as the preferred network type in the network mode settings. Another option is national roaming, which lets you connect to other carriers' networks without swapping your SIM card. This service works between Kyivstar, Vodafone, and lifecell and can help during local disruptions.
The issue of mobile users in Ukraine dropping to the EDGE network highlights the urgent need for modern network infrastructure development.

Frequent coverage disruptions can hurt the convenience of internet use, especially as demand for high-speed data grows. Carriers should focus on improving coverage quality, particularly in areas where problems are common. It's also important for consumers to know how to adjust their device settings to optimize network connections.
